Held Saturday and Sunday (October 22 and 23) in Cambridge, MA, the Head of the Charles attracted some 9,000 rowers from around the world. As many as 300,000 spectators lined the course along the Charles River and crowded the arching bridges that span the winding river.
Twin Cities Youth Rowing Club girls’ and boys’ varsity four crews had strong showings at the Regatta, the world’s largest two-day rowing event, finishing 10th and 38th respectively in the Youth Fours category. The girls’ varsity four finished in a time of 19:28.34, 37 seconds behind the winners from the Connecticut Boat Club. The girls were within 3.27 percent of first place in a very competitive field. The girls team was comprised of Catherine Ahrens (Minnetonka High School), Lexi Brandt (Prior Lake High School), Cassandra Johnson (Southwest Christian High School), Kaitlin Wright (Lakeville North High School) and Coxswain Meredith Kelly (Minnetonka High School). “I was honestly expecting our girls to do very well, but I was still blown away by our results.” said Coach Cho. Ours was a very young boat, comprised of two juniors and two sophomores, and we were competing for the first time in a large-scale, elite-level regatta. There were so many factors that were out of our control, but the girls did their thing: they focused on their speed and technique, and Meredith Kelly absolutely owned that course. It was a magnificent performance all around; I believe it was a pretty accurate representation of who and what we are as a club." The boys’ varsity four finished in a time of 18:22.83, about 98 seconds behind the winners from Sarasota, FL. The boys were within 9.73 percent of first place, also in a very competitive field. The boys’ team was comprised of Eiel Bach (Hopkins High School), Kyle Gullickson (Minnetonka High School), Patrick Kelliher, (Minneapolis Southwest High School), Christopher Vassallo (Minnetonka High School), and Coxswain Grace Stewart (Edina High School).
According to John Davis, Head Boys Coach “We set a goal of finishing in the top half of the 78 crews entered (one scratched) and our crew did just that. The boys rowed hard and Grace Stewart steered a perfect course, past opposing crews, under bridges and around corners. Against bigger, more experienced national and international teams we fared well enough to qualify for an automatic invitation to next year’s Head of the Charles. I am very pleased.”
Coach Tina Cho said "Our presence and performance at the Charles is a pivotal milestone for us as a club. The Charles has been on our radar since the inception of TCYR, but we held off entering until we were sure that we could be competitive and retain our entries for the years to follow. Our presence here indicates the coaches' confidence in the development and speed of our crews, and their performances validate our confidence." Both TCYR crews’ top-half finishes guarantee the club automatic invitations back for next year’s Head of the Charles Regatta in these categories. Congratulations TCYR!

New state law takes effect on September 1st regarding “Concussions and Youth Athletes.” 08/27/11
The Minnesota legislation (CHAPTER 90--S.F.No. 612) requires any municipality, business, school district or nonprofit organization that organizes a youth athletic activity and charges a fee to follow the statutes requirements. Minnesota has joined a growing number of states that have passed laws on providing concussion information, training and procedures to be followed for youth athletes before returning to play. This law becomes effective Thursday, September 1, 2011.
More information can be obtained about the nature and risks of concussions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at www.cdc.gov/concussion/HeadsUp/youth.html and click on the appropriate link for fact sheets for parents, athletes and coaches/officials.

Andy O’Brien chaired this event and over seventy TCYR parents’, alumni and friends volunteered. Thank you to everyone who helped and a special thank you to Three Rivers Park.

Courageous Boat Dedication, Eden Prairie MN 6/4/11
On a beautiful, sun-filled Saturday morning on the shores of Bryant Lake, an eight boat was named Courageous in memory of Maren Hed, wife of Dick Hurrelbrink and mother of sons Duncan and TCYR alumnus Tucker. TCYR founder Carri Hammett led the ceremony and said, “The boat dedication process formalizes our mutual obligation to care for each other – the crew for the boat and the boat for the crew.” Approximately 75 people attended the dedication, including Maren’s family and friends, TYC rowers and their families. Dick commented, “If you didn’t know Maren, you might not know how very right it is to have something like a competitive rowing shell dedicated to her and her memory. Maren was a huge advocate of sports where girls and boys competed together as equals.” He concluded, “To all of the young women, now and in the future, who will take their seats in the Courageous: Remember, Maren really liked to go fast and she really, really liked to win!” TCYR thanks the Hurrelbrink Family for their generous boat donation and for the honor of dedicating it to Maren by naming it Courageous!
TCY Rowers competed in Cincinnati, Ohio at the Midwest Junior Rowing Championships. The good folks at Cincinnati Junior Rowing Club hosted a wonderful event, despite some major logistical constraints with flooding. The race conditions were optimal with a sunny, 80 degree day and flat water. This is the second time the team has participated in this regional competition and what a difference a year makes. Head Coach Tina Cho said “With only three weeks of water time, a bunch of novices, and a whole lot of guts and muscle, we managed to place several boats into various finals, and even brought home some hardware. The coaches could not be prouder of the team.” A big thank you goes to the chaperones (Heidi Brandt, Joe Jasper, Byron Wieberdink, and Lea Wright) and trailer driver (Todd Wright) for making the weekend as stress-free as possible for everyone. Speakmon Regatta- Columbus OH, 10/14-10/17/10
This race was one for the books. The Jack Speakmon Regatta is the second largest regatta that we have attended with over 20 boats competing in each of our events. To make the best use of our time, we left Thursday night at 10pm and drove through the night. The race day opened up with some chilly sunshine, warming up to a perfect racing temperature of mid-60s by early afternoon. We raced in eight events total: Men's Open 4, Men's Junior 4, Men's Novice 4, Men's Junior 8, Men's Novice 8, Women's Novice 4, Women's Junior 4, and Women's Junior 8. Our boats put up some great performances with some podium finishes-gold in the Men's Novice 4 and silver in the Women's Novice 4! Our varsity boats finished in the top quarter of the field, which is fantastic for our first team showing at this event. All in all, it was a great weekend. A HUGE thank you to the chaperones (Heidi Brandt, Susan Tucker, Al Kupka, and Bill Schubert). We could not have done this without them, their generosity, and (especially) their infinite well of patience and good humor.

Head of the Des Moines Regatta- Des Moines IA 9/25/10
This event is always held on the last Saturday in September on the Des Moines River “come heat or high water” as their web site says. 2010 was one of the high water years. The 2.87 mile row upstream to the finish at Prospect Park is challenging in good weather. This year the rowers battled strong currents and heavy rains during the race. Unfortunately, the regatta was canceled after several events because of the weather so some rowers didn’t have a chance to compete at this regatta. TCYR results were: 1st and 5th in Men’s Junior 8; 3rd and 4th in Men’s Novice 8 (1st and 2nd as Junior Crews); Women’s Novice 4 placed 1st and 2nd.

Many thanks go to Katie McNamara and Helena Seidel for organizing this wonderful event and to all of those who participated in the scrubbing!
